Residential Roofing FAQs

If your question is not answered below, please get in touch!

At Academy we believe that the most important thing to look for in roofing company is STABILITY. We have been in business since 1980. Our company is locally owned and operated, and we have thousands of satisfied customers all along the front range.

All too often roof problems are discovered after leaks or other serious damage occurs. Periodic inspections can often uncover cracked, warped, or missing shingles, loose seams and deteriorated flashings, excessive surface granules accumulating in the gutters and other visible signs of roof problems. We look for cracked paint, stains on interior ceilings, mold and mildew growth, discolored plasterboard and peeling wallpaper as signs of damaged roof areas.

Not necessarily. Leaking can result because some flashings have come loose or because a section of the roof has been damaged.

Recent code changes in most municipalities now mandate that all layers are removed before reroofing. Additionally, roofing material manufacturers consider it best practice to remove existing roofing, if possible, so that the installer can inspect the decking underneath. Depending on what materials we’re installing on the existing roof, it is sometimes impossible to install a new roof over the old. The appearance would be less than acceptable.

At Academy Roofing, we take particular care in assessing your current roof ventilation before re-roofing. The right ventilation system will protect your attic and roof, save energy and promote a more comfortable temperature in your home.

  • Accelerates granule loss
  • Accelerates shingle aging
  • Voids manufacturers warranties
  • Leads to other associated problems

An Impact Resistant shingle has met the test criteria of UL 2218. The test classifies the resistance of roofing products to impact damage by dropping steel balls on roofing samples and observing the damage. Products are rated 1 to 4 with a score of 4 having the greatest resistance to impacts. Several shingle manufacturers have products with a Class 4 impact resistance rating. Some major insurance companies also offer homeowner premium discounts for the use of Class 4 impact resistant rated products.

Improving the efficiency of your home is a hot topic in today’s world. One way to save on energy cost is to assess how your attic is insulated. This is done by determining your insulation’s R-value, which is your attic’s resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the more effective the insulation will be at keeping your house warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Even if you currently have some insulation, your home may require more insulation to maximize your comfort.

While it is true that the roofing process is disruptive, we work hard to minimize the impact on you and your family. However, for several days, your home does become a construction jobsite. Before we begin work on your home, we will send you a letter outlining the things you can do to prepare for our arrival. You will also receive the names and phone numbers of your Academy Roofing team who will ensure that your re-roofing project runs smoothly.

Upon request, we will provide you with a copy of the manufacturer’s warranties on the products you are considering before your choose your roof.

We install all types of steep slope roofing products including shakes, cedar shingles, asphalt (composition) shingles, concrete and clay tile, slate and premium synthetic shingles. On low slope roofs, we install single ply EPDM rubber membrane, TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin Membrane) and self adhered SBS modified bitumen roofing. We also install metal roofing from standing seam, to custom items such as shrouds, cupolas, fireplace caps as well as custom flashings. We do not install torch down (modified bitumen) or built up (tar and gravel) roof systems.

We install 5″, 6” and 7″ gutters in various profiles and metal types. 4” gutters are still available for repairs only. (Four inch gutter machines are no longer made, but we still have two machines.) Gutter is available in painted steel, aluminum and copper. Specialty gutters (i.e., for historic buildings, etc.) can be fabricated by our in-house metal craftsman. We also custom fabricate cupolas, fireplace caps and shrouds, collection boxes, copper bay windows, barrels and turret coverings.

Two things can go wrong on a roof. The roof or repair can be installed incorrectly or the product used on the roof can fail. When the roof or repair is installed incorrectly, that is considered a workmanship defect. It is covered under the Academy Roofing workmanship warranty. If the product fails, the defect is covered under the manufacturer’s warranty.

We schedule jobs in the order in which the signed contracts are received. Weather is a major factor that can affect and change our schedule. We cannot work when it is raining, snowing or if your area is experiencing high winds. There could be unexpected issues that arise on jobs where we are working. We must finish these jobs before we move on to your project. We care about the integrity of each roofing system we install so we always finish a job completely before beginning a new project.

We usually do not ask for any deposit. You typically will be billed when we complete our work. Your payment is due upon receipt of our invoice. If you are waiting for an inspection from the city or county, it is considered acceptable to hold 10% of the amount due until your home passes final inspection. We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover for payments up to $2,500.
